Erfurt invites you to a rendezvous in the heart of Germany
Martin Luther, the great Reformer, once declared that Erfurt is "in the ideal location, the perfect place for a city".

Erfurt, the regional capital of Thuringia, is transformed in the run-up to Christmas. This is an ideal time to visit one of the best-preserved medieval old quarters in Germany with its delightful blend of wealthy patrician townhouses and lovingly restored half-timbered buildings. Erfurt's landmark, the unmistakable ensemble of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus, is bathed in a warm glow, while Christmas carols ring out and the air is filled with the aroma of glühwein and pfefferkuchen (gingerbread).

As you can imagine, Erfurt's enchanting old quarter makes an especially atmospheric setting as Christmas approaches.

The opening of the Christmas market is the signal for the rest of the city to enter into the Christmas spirit. A sea of fairylights illuminate the city centre while festive decorations adorn the shops and stores. Some of Erfurt's most beautiful locations are also excellent Christmas shopping destinations, both in the medieval streets and lanes with their churches and half-timbered buildings and along the stone-built Merchants' Bridge from the 13th century. At 120 metres in length and with 32 inhabited houses, it is the longest bridge in Europe to have buildings along its entire span.

Discover one of Germany's prettiest Christmas markets and soak up the atmosphere of more than 1,260 years of history. Erfurt Tourism & Marketing has a great range of individual and group packages on offer and should be your first port of call when planning a trip to the city.

Our recommendation: combine your visit to one of Germany's most beautiful Christmas markets with a shopping spree and a tour of the medieval old quarter.

Opening times:
Sunday to Wednesday 10am to 8pm
Thursday to Saturday 10am to 9pm
